SUMMARY:OUT at CHM | Panel Discussion: 100 Years of LGBTQIA+ Rights: Henry Gerber and the Society for Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Many people believe that the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States began with the Stonewall Riots of 1969\, but there is a much longer history of activism and community building in the pre-Stonewall era. Even before the earlier Homophile Movement of the 1950s and 1960s\, sexual and gender minorities found creative ways to carve a space for themselves in a deeply oppressive society.   \nIn 1924\, Henry Gerber founded the Society for Human Rights\, the first gay rights organization in the US\, right here in Chicago. Inspired by the Homosexual Emancipation movement in Germany around the turn of the 20th century\, the Society for Human Rights offered a small but critical source of connection between homosexual men long before the rise of the gay liberation movement or today’s modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement.  \nJoin us to celebrate the centennial anniversary of this organization with a conversation about Henry Gerber’s life\, the history of the early gay rights movement in the US\, and the ongoing influence of the Society for Human Rights and Chicago’s central place in queer history.   \n$12; $8 members  \nThis program is provided in partnership with the Gerber/Hart Library and Archives.

DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, the place now known as Chicago was a thriving center of Indigenous life. Potawatomi people lived on and took care of the land until they were forced out by non-Native settlers. The Ojibwe\, Odawa\, Peoria\, Kaskaskia\, Miami\, Mascouten\, Sac and Fox\, Kickapoo\, Ho-Chunk\, Menomonee\, and tribes whose names have been lost due to genocide also lived\, gathered\, and traded in this region.  \nChicago today still owes much to the Indigenous peoples of this land. In fact\, the city’s name comes from “Checagou\,” likely derived by French traders from the word “Zhegagoynak.” In Potawatomi\, “zhegagosh” means “wild onion” and “nak” means “the place of.  \nIn commemoration of Native American Heritage Month\, we invite you to join us for activities celebrating Native histories and the Indigenous peoples who continue to thrive in our city. Learn about the ongoing work Native American organizations and individuals do in Chicago and how they use the arts as a tool to share their cultures and to promote social change.   \n2:00–3:00 p.m. – Livestreamed author talk with Dr. John N. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Bus Tour | The Story of Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley with Dilla Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join Chicago urban historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas on an engaging bus tour of key Chicago sites important to Emmett Till’s life and that humanize the well-known story of his harrowing death. \nIn 1955\, news of the tragic\, racially motivated abduction and murder of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old African American from Chicago\, while visiting relatives in Mississippi shook the nation. Lynchings of African Americans were uncommon enough by the 1950s that the horrific nature of the killing of a young boy permeated the national consciousness. The decision of his mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, to have an open casket funeral and make known the brutality of his murder helped propel the story into people’s hearts and minds. Still\, the impact of anti-Black racism and white supremacy shaped both legal and public responses to his murder. \nThe following trial of his killers\, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam\, and their subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury\, Till’s story became a catalyst for the next stages of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. \nAs you traverse the city with Dilla\, learn about Emmett’s early childhood\, Mamie’s life\, and more as you visit sites such as Mamie Till-Mobley’s home in Chicago and the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ where Till’s funeral took place. \nTour runs 2–3 hours and starts and ends at the Chicago History Museum. \n$55; $45 members \nThis tour is presented in partnership with Chicago Mahogany Tours.

DESCRIPTION:Social Justice artist Tonika Lewis Johnson’s Folded Map Project visually connects residents who live at corresponding addresses on the North and South Sides of Chicago. Johnson investigates what urban segregation looks like and the impact it has on Chicago residents. From a photographic study to a multimedia exploration with video interviews\, the Folded Map Project now also includes a student curriculum. \nIn this interactive session\, you will discover how to center your student’s experiences in Chicago to explore and understand the historical and contemporary forces that created and perpetuated racial segregation. DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Joshua Salzmann\, associate professor of history at Northeastern Illinois University\, presents “Disarming Chicago: Gun Control from Black Power to Barack Obama.” \nFrom Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Chicago Freedom Movement” to the presidency of Barack Obama\, the Windy City has taken center stage in a national debate about race and gun control. White “law and order” politicians passed gun laws in the 1960s to strengthen the power of police to contain riots and student protests and to help dismantle the Black Panther Party. Many African American lawmakers subsequently embraced gun control in the 1970s and ’80s\, as Chicago and other “Rust Belt” cities lost their industrial bases and crime spiked. Chicago’s local firearm laws\, in turn\, served as a model for national crime fighting policies advocated by Democrats\, including Bill Clinton and Barack Obama\, and opposed by Republicans\, including Donald Trump. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. Hearn\, and Sarah Ross discuss Our Girl Tuesday: An Unfurling for Dr. Margaret T.G Burroughs (2023)\, the influence and impact of Dr. Burroughs\, and the power of memory\, remembrance\, activism\, and archives. \nLouisiana-born and Chicago-raised artist\, activist\, educator\, historian\, and institution builder Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs (1915–2010) poured her interconnected and multimodal advocacy into her praxis of care\, love\, and visions of freedom for Black people. \nOur Girl Tuesday presents a collection of essays\, interviews\, poetry\, art and archives that honor and reflect the immense influence Dr. Burroughs had on the political and cultural life of Chicago and the lives of people she met. The contributors to the Zine include artists\, poets\, writers\, educators\, activists\, curators\, and scholars who pulled from existing archives\, gathered new materials and created new works to be entered into the living archive of Dr. Burroughs. \nThis collection iterates the impact of Dr. Burroughs and her politics of culture\, care\, freedom\, and love for Black people. A special section of the publication includes an unfurling\, a social practice introduced to this project by Skyla Hearn whereby people\, as liberatory memory workers\, pull materials from existing archives and share what those materials mean to them. \nFree: RSVP required.

Members will learn more about Emmett Till and this historic exhibition from Charles Bethea\, Andrew W. Mellon Director of Curatorial Affairs. \n“The murder of my son has shown me that what happens to any of us\, anywhere in the world\, had better be the business of us all.” —Mamie Till-Mobley \nIn 1955\, the murder of Emmett Till\, a Black teenager from Chicago\, and the subsequent criminal trial in Tallahatchie County\, Mississippi\, attracted international attention and sparked the Civil Rights Movement. Injustice: The Trial for the Murder of Emmett Till begins with photographs of a joyful Emmett in life and of his funeral attended by thousands. The trial proceedings are then shared through courtroom sketches by Franklin McMahon. These drawings give a visual account of a trial that amplified the inequities Black Americans face within the US court system\, including a lack of equal protection under the law. Such injustices were challenged by the courageous actions of Emmett’s mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, and others who boldly stand in the face of racial injustice. This exhibition prompts visitors to consider how Emmett’s legacy continues in those seeking justice for Black lives today. \nFree to members; RSVP required.

DESCRIPTION:Join Chicago urban historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas on an engaging bus tour of key Chicago sites important to Emmett Till’s life and that humanize the well-known story of his harrowing death. \nIn 1955\, news of the tragic\, racially motivated abduction and murder of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old African American from Chicago\, while visiting relatives in Mississippi shook the nation. Lynchings of African Americans were uncommon enough by the 1950s that the horrific nature of the killing of a young boy permeated the national consciousness. The decision of his mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, to have an open casket funeral and make known the brutality of his murder helped propel the story into people’s hearts and minds. Still\, the impact of anti-Black racism and white supremacy shaped both legal and public responses to his murder. \nThe following trial of his killers\, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam\, and their subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury\, Till’s story became a catalyst for the next stages of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. \nAs you traverse the city with Dilla\, learn about Emmett’s early childhood\, Mamie’s life\, and more as you visit sites such as Mamie Till-Mobley’s home in Chicago and the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ where Till’s funeral took place. \nTour runs 2–3 hours and starts and ends at the Chicago History Museum. \n$55; $45 members

SUMMARY:Virtual Urban History Seminar | “Islam on a City Campus”
DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Abdul Basith Basheer\, a PhD student in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, presents “Islam on a City Campus: Muslim Student Community Building and Activism at UIC.” \nThis talk examines the history of shifting Muslim student identities and the cultivation of a community since the 1960s at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)\, an inner-city institution nestled between Chicago’s Greektown and Little Italy neighborhoods. Historically\, UIC has been known as the university of choice for Chicago’s working class and first-generation college students. Drawing on university archival material and oral histories conducted with Muslim alumni living in Chicagoland\, Abdul provides us with a close examination of urban Muslim history. Ultimately\, he argues that Muslim student identity at UIC was the product of different viewpoints\, ideologies\, and understandings of both religion and religious identity within a cosmopolitan urban space like Chicago and its surrounding metro area. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Spooky Season at CHM with a screening of the Chicago-based horror film Child’s Play (1988\, dir. Tom Holland).   \nFollowing the film\, members from Ghostlight Theater will join us for some spooky-themed trivia about other horror movies set in Chicago. Between each round\, actors will perform live reenactments of scenes from these movies on stage!
