SUMMARY:Virtual Urban History Seminar | “Islam on a City Campus”
DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Abdul Basith Basheer\, a PhD student in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, presents “Islam on a City Campus: Muslim Student Community Building and Activism at UIC.” \nThis talk examines the history of shifting Muslim student identities and the cultivation of a community since the 1960s at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)\, an inner-city institution nestled between Chicago’s Greektown and Little Italy neighborhoods. Historically\, UIC has been known as the university of choice for Chicago’s working class and first-generation college students. Drawing on university archival material and oral histories conducted with Muslim alumni living in Chicagoland\, Abdul provides us with a close examination of urban Muslim history. Ultimately\, he argues that Muslim student identity at UIC was the product of different viewpoints\, ideologies\, and understandings of both religion and religious identity within a cosmopolitan urban space like Chicago and its surrounding metro area. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Spooky Season at CHM with a screening of the Chicago-based horror film Child’s Play (1988\, dir. Tom Holland).   \nFollowing the film\, members from Ghostlight Theater will join us for some spooky-themed trivia about other horror movies set in Chicago. Between each round\, actors will perform live reenactments of scenes from these movies on stage! Prizes will be awarded to trivia winners.  \nChild’s Play is rated R for violence\, strong language\, and frightening and intense scenes. Visitors must be 17 years of age or older or accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least age 25. DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, Hispanic Heritage Week was first observed under the directive of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Twenty years later\, in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan\, the week was expanded to a full month of honoring the cultures\, contributions\, and collective actions of people of Latine descent. Celebrated between September 15 and October 15 each year\, the first day of this heritage month honors the independence of Costa Rica\, El Salvador\, Guatemala\, Honduras\, and Nicaragua from colonial Spanish rule on September 15\, 1821.  \nToday\, nearly one-third of Chicago’s total population is of Latine descent\, and numerous Latine neighborhoods such as Pilsen\, Little Village\, and Humboldt Park have grown and developed over the years\, starting in the early 20th century to today!  \n Join us as we celebrate Latine Heritage Month with fun and engaging opportunities to learn more about the many cultures and peoples of Latin America. SUMMARY:Bus Tour | The Story of Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley with Dilla Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join Chicago urban historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas on an engaging bus tour of key Chicago sites important to Emmett Till’s life and that humanize the well-known story of his harrowing death. \nIn 1955\, news of the tragic\, racially motivated abduction and murder of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old African American from Chicago\, while visiting relatives in Mississippi shook the nation. Lynchings of African Americans were uncommon enough by the 1950s that the horrific nature of the killing of a young boy permeated the national consciousness. The decision of his mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, to have an open casket funeral and make known the brutality of his murder helped propel the story into people’s hearts and minds. Still\, the impact of anti-Black racism and white supremacy shaped both legal and public responses to his murder. \nThe following trial of his killers\, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam\, and their subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury\, Till’s story became a catalyst for the next stages of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. \nAs you traverse the city with Dilla\, learn about Emmett’s early childhood\, Mamie’s life\, and more as you visit sites such as Mamie Till-Mobley’s home in Chicago and the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ where Till’s funeral took place. \nTour runs 2–3 hours and starts and ends at the Chicago History Museum. \n$55; $45 members

DESCRIPTION:Join Chicago urban historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas on an engaging bus tour of key Chicago sites important to Emmett Till’s life and that humanize the well-known story of his harrowing death. \nIn 1955\, news of the tragic\, racially motivated abduction and murder of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old African American from Chicago\, while visiting relatives in Mississippi shook the nation. Lynchings of African Americans were uncommon enough by the 1950s that the horrific nature of the killing of a young boy permeated the national consciousness. The decision of his mother\, Mamie Till-Mobley\, to have an open casket funeral and make known the brutality of his murder helped propel the story into people’s hearts and minds. Still\, the impact of anti-Black racism and white supremacy shaped both legal and public responses to his murder. \nThe following trial of his killers\, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam\, and their subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury\, Till’s story became a catalyst for the next stages of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. \nAs you traverse the city with Dilla\, learn about Emmett’s early childhood\, Mamie’s life\, and more as you visit sites such as Mamie Till-Mobley’s home in Chicago and the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ where Till’s funeral took place. \nTour runs 3–4 hours and starts and ends at the Chicago History Museum. \n$55; $45 members

SUMMARY:Pop-up Exhibition by Chicago Artivism Teens
DESCRIPTION:Come up to the second floor of CHM to see murals\, protest signs\, and banners created this summer at CHM by six Chicago teens—Angel\, Charlie\, Emily\, Natalie\, Nina and Ursula—as part of an intensive program exploring the city’s legacy of artivism (art + activism). The teens’ murals are located in Chicago: Crossroads of America\, and their banners and protest signs reflecting their advocacy for contemporary issues they care about are displayed near the entrance to Designing for Change: Chicago Protest Art of the 1960s–70s. \nDrawing inspiration from Designing for Change\, the teens explored social movements of the time and the artwork that amplified them. They collaborated with teaching artists to use period art techniques and mediums to advocate for contemporary issues and ideas. As part of their experience\, the teens learned more about the history of the era from CHM education and curatorial staff and about museum work from collections\, conservation\, exhibitions\, and security staff. \nThe teens wrote the following manifesto to declare their intentions for their participation in this program: \nTo us\, artivism is collective advocacy and activism through artistic expression. We will: \n\nBring our own perspectives and open minds to our artivist community.\nCollaborate through ideas\, encouragement and reflection to create art that illuminates social justice issues.\nUse historical artistic styles and mediums to advocate for contemporary issues and ideas in order to bridge the gap between past and present.\nInspire others through art that sparks emotion\, initiating conversation.\n\nIn addition to the murals\, banners\, and protest signs\, the teens made: buttons; screen-printed posters\, tote bags\, and t-shirts; personal logos; blackout poetry; block prints; wheat-pasted posters; and more. DESCRIPTION:CHM members are invited to join director of Research and Access Ellen Keith and reference librarian Maggie Cusick of the Abakanowicz Research Center on an exploration of the past using CHM’s Sanborn Fire Insurance maps.  \nThis event is on-site at the Abakanowicz Research Center\, where we require visitors to wear masks. Join us for a special screening of Love Letter to the West Side (2024)\, a documentary sharing oral histories of West Siders that contends with silence and stereotypes about the city’s West Side. The film highlights the area’s historical and cultural contributions to the city as critical to understanding the whole of Chicago’s history. \nProduced by the Capstone Clique\, a group of culture and memory workers serving the West Side\, this documentary is their attempt to preserve and share the vibrant stories of Chicago’s West Side and to “encourage all Chicagoans to visit and to learn more about the West Side (the best side)\, of Chicago.” \nComplete your experience by participating in a special West Side-themed trivia contest and by adding your “love for the Westside” to an interactive map. \nFree; RSVP required
