DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. LaDale Winling of Virginia Tech and Maura Fennelly of Northwestern University present “The Chicago Covenants Project: Excavating the Documents of Exclusion.” \nThe Chicago Covenants Project is a volunteer-driven research effort to identify every racially restrictive covenant in Cook County. Fennelly and Winling will detail the collaborative research process to find covenants in the millions of analogue real estate documents held by the county clerk. They will also share some of their findings\, from mapping the widespread use of covenants to detailing the forms of legal resistance to covenants offered by African Americans. \nThis in-person session is free of charge and includes complimentary coffee and tea. Delia Fernández-Jones\, an associate professor of history at Michigan State University\, presents “Telling Our Stories: Using Historical Scholarship to Combat Black and Latinx Displacement in Grand Rapids\, Michigan.” \nThis talk examines the history of Latinxs and African Americans along the Grandville Avenue corridor in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, from the 1950s to the 1970s to help understand the threats of gentrification and displacement in the present. Drawing on her book\, Making the MexiRican City: Migration\, Placemaking\, and Activism in Grand Rapids\, Michigan (University of Illinois Press\, 2023) and community-engaged scholarship\, Dr. Fernández-Jones gives insights into how she is collaborating with grassroots community organizations to help preserve Black and Latinx histories and narratives of cross racial coalition in this smaller\, urban center in the face of impending demolitions and changing neighborhood dynamics. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. DESCRIPTION:Join us as Dr. Siobhan Moroney\, an associate professor of politics at Lake Forest College\, discusses her recent book Chicagoland Dream Houses: How a Mid-Century Architecture Competition Reimagined the American Home (2024). \nIn-depth and extensively illustrated\, Chicagoland Dream Houses revisits this overlooked chapter in Chicago and architectural history. Organizers conceived the competition to help remedy the postwar housing crisis and it received front-page news coverage and an exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. It also had the rare distinction of taking designs from paper to reality\, an accomplishment that brought out two hundred thousand people to tour finished homes. Yet the contest ultimately failed in its aim to inspire new home construction that would solve Chicago’s housing shortage. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a livestreamed author talk with Dr. Cookie Woolner (she/her) of the University of Memphis as she discusses her book\, The Famous Lady Lovers: Black Women and Queer Desire Before Stonewall (University of North Carolina Press\, Sept. 2023)\, which draws upon research conducted at numerous archives\, including the Chicago History Museum. \nBlack queer women have shaped American culture since long before the era of gay liberation. Decades prior to the Stonewall Uprising\, in the 1920s and 1930s\, Black “lady lovers”—as women who loved women were then called—crafted a queer world. In the cabarets\, rent parties\, speakeasies\, literary salons\, and universities of the Jazz Age and Great Depression\, communities of Black lady lovers grew\, and queer flirtations flourished. \nDr. Woolner uncovers the intimate lives of performers\, writers\, and educators such as Bessie Smith\, Ethel Waters\, Gladys Bentley\, Alice Dunbar-Nelson\, and Lucy Diggs Slowe\, along with the many everyday women she encountered in the archives. \nThis program is offered in a hybrid manner. DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Carie Rael\, an assistant professor of history at California State University\, Long Beach\, presents “The Happiest Place on Earth? Latinx Organizing against Policing and Displacement in Anaheim and Santa Ana from 1995 to 2012.” \nRael’s work explores radical Latinx organizing against police brutality\, Disney’s political influence\, and redevelopment in the cities of Anaheim and Santa Ana in Orange County\, California. These factors culminated in a major uprising in Anaheim in 2012. Anaheim police ramped up their use of force and violence in the majority Latinx city as the Disney corporation played an outsized role in control in city politics. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series features a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Gordon Mantler\, Executive Director\, University Writing Program\, and Associate Professor of Writing and of History\, The George Washington University\, presents “The Multiracial Promise: Coalition\, Mayoral Politics\, and the Legacy of Harold Washington.” \nThe election of Harold Washington in 1983 as the first Black mayor of Chicago reveals both the promise of multiracial coalition in the 1980s and the peril of placing too many resources in electoral politics alone. His electoral victories not only established the charismatic politician as a folk hero\, but also underscored the great potential for the era’s progressive\, mostly Democratic urban politics when Ronald Reagan and other political conservatives appeared resurgent. Yet what could be called the Washington era revealed clear limits to electoral politics when decoupled from neighborhood-based movement organizing and\, thus\, could be considered a cautionary tale about the risks of placing too much weight on elections above all other civic action. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount.
