DESCRIPTION:Zoom sessions on Saturdays\, January 20\, and February 24\, 9:00 a.m.–Noon\nAsynchronous online engagement in between \nCHM’s Virtual Teacher Book Club is back! This time we will follow middle schooler\, Claire\, as she races to figure out what—or who—has been haunting her after she helped on her father’s ghost-themed Chicago bus tour. Scritch\, Scratch: A Ghost Story was written by Chicago author Lindsay Currie for a middle school audience and features many familiar Chicago haunts and histories. A second\, secret book\, revealed midway through book club\, will give us more historical context about the events surrounding Claire’s haunting. During the final zoom session\, we’ll be joined by author Lindsay Currie to discuss the book and answer any questions you might have! \nOnline engagement fosters rich discussions\, practical resources\, and strategies to incorporate both fiction and nonfiction writings into classroom instruction. \n$50. Books are included with the registration fee. 18 PD hours; must attend both sessions and participate in online discussions.

SUMMARY:Virtual Urban History Seminar | Andrew Hurley
DESCRIPTION:The Urban History Seminar series feature a scholarly presentation followed by lively discussion. Andrew Hurley\, a professor of history at the University of Missouri–St. Louis\, presents “Death\, Despondency\, and Hysteria in the American City: The All But Forgotten Heat Wave of 1936.” \nIn the midst of the Great Depression\, the United States experienced an environmental catastrophe of epic proportions\, a seven-year drought lasting from to 1930 to 1936\, that brought ruin to farm economies on the Great Plains and created the infamous Dust Bowl. Unusually dry weather also produced some of the hottest summers on record in the United States. Less remembered than the dust storms and drought\, a succession of brutal heat waves disproportionately affected cities and towns\, primarily in the American Midwest. The 1936 hot spell was the deadliest among them\, claiming over 10\,000 lives and severely disrupting vital urban functions. \nIn this presentation\, Hurley will share his ongoing research about the 1936 summer heat wave and its impact on major Midwestern metropolises\, including Chicago. The talk will demonstrate how early 20th-century urban development heightened the risks associated with hot weather and explore the strategies that citizens employed to navigate the superheated metropolis and its dangers. \nThe Zoom session will open at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:15 p.m. RSVP is required. \nThis session is free of charge; we would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. DESCRIPTION:“Here we are\, back with you again!” \nJoin us to watch newly digitized episodes of Kukla\, Fran and Ollie on the big screen in our Robert R. McCormick Theater. Be sure to also visit Madame Ooglepuss in Chicago: Crossroads of America on the second floor. \nIn 1947\, puppeteer Burr Tillstrom brought an extraordinary troupe of performers already familiar to many Chicagoans to local television station WBKB. Joined by their front-of-stage friend Fran Allison\, the Kuklapolitans—Oliver J. Dragon\, Beulah Witch\, Cecil Bill\, Madame Ooglepuss\, Fletcher Rabbit\, Colonel Crackie\, and Kukla himself—were welcomed into hundreds of thousands of American homes on network television shows of a variety of lengths and formats in the 1950s. Working without a script\, the cast of Kukla\, Fran and Ollie improvised conversations about everyday life laced with humor\, astute commentary on current events\, original music\, and perennial features. \nIncluded with general admission.
